9. _M_o_v_i_e__M_a_k_e_r
Movie Maker (invoked from the command line as _m_o_v_i_e_m_a_k_e_r) is
a graphical tool for creating and editing movies. Movies
can include images from IRIS ImageVision Library image
files, sound from audio files, and images and sound from
movie files.
Either sound or silent movies can be created. Movie Maker
includes cut, copy, and paste editing capabilities for movie
files.
On-line help is available describing in detail how to go
about creating and editing movies.
9.1 _K_n_o_w_n__P_r_o_b_l_e_m_s__a_n_d__W_o_r_k_a_r_o_u_n_d_s
This section lists problems in the Movie Maker software and
ways to work around them.
+o It is not possible to directly edit most types of
QuickTime movies. QuickTime movies may be imported
into an SGI movie and sections of a QuickTime movie may
be exported as a new movie using the Export Options and
Export features of Movie Maker.
+o Optimizing a movie requires copying the movie file,
which can take a significant amount of disk space. If
there is not enough, Movie Maker will report this fact
and leave the movie unoptimized.
+o The Undo command is still not supported in this
release.
+o Though Movie Maker has "Cut" and "Paste" features on
its menu, it does not support Cut and Paste between
itself and other applications such as Movie Player,
Showcase, or Sound Editor.
+o When previewing a movie, the entire Movie Maker display
becomes inactive. You must end the preview by closing
the Movie Player application before Movie Maker will
continue the edit session.
+o Movie Maker behaves unintuitively when inserting just
audio or just image frames into an existing movie. You
would expect that it would move the existing audio and
image data together to maintain the synchronization.
However, only the data in the track that you are
inserting into gets moved. To workaround, you need to
insert an equal amount of the other data.

+o Movie Maker is unable to create JPEG-encoded movies
which are compatible with the Cosmo Compress option.
You can use the dmconvert(1) command convert an
existing movie to a format which can be played back
using Cosmo Compress. The dmconvert(1) man page
includes example command-line invocations for creating
movies suitable for real-time playback with Cosmo.
9.2 _C_h_a_n_g_e_s__f_r_o_m__t_h_e__p_r_e_v_i_o_u_s__M_o_v_i_e__M_a_k_e_r
This section lists the changes in the interface of Movie
Maker from the 5.3 version.
+o Movie Maker adds compression quality controls for SGI
and QuickTime compression codecs. They are available
in both the Movie Creation Options and Movie Export
Options panels.
+o Movie Maker can now open MPEG movies. However, it
cannot edit or create them. To create MPEG movies, use
Media Convert or the dmconvert command. You must obtain
a Silicon Graphics _M_P_E_G _E_n_c_o_d_e_r _L_i_c_e_n_s_e if you want to
create MPEG movies or sound files.
+o The Cinepak (also known as "Compact Video") compression
scheme is now supported for QuickTime movies. You must
obtain a Silicon Graphics _C_i_n_e_p_a_k _E_n_c_o_d_e_r _L_i_c_e_n_s_e if
you want to create QuickTime Cinepak movies. It is not
necessary to obtain a license in order to open Cinepak
movies with Movie Maker.
9.3 _B_u_g__F_i_x_e_s
This section lists the bugs fixed since the IRIX 5.3 release
of Moviemaker.
+o In IRIX 5.3, TIFF still image output would not work
correctly. This bug has been fixed.
+o In IRIX 5.3, if you exported a QuickTime movie with no
image compression, it would appear with shifted colors.
This bug has been fixed.
